Girls building models for the Road to RIAT Blast Off competition

Road to RIAT: Blast Off

Road to RIAT's big sister, Road to RIAT: Blast Off is all about space.

Discovering the RAF’s role in space exploration and tackling the puzzle of where to locate a new Mars exploration base, teams will spend the day navigating through a series of challenges which include learning about science and engineering, and building their own prototypes.

The competition is run in partnership with The Smallpeice Trust and RAF Youth STEM

About the competition

Road to RIAT: Blast Off is a four-part programme which takes students deeper into space exploration.

The Competition launches with a livestream introducing the competition. This is followed by a face-to-face STEM day where teams learn about force and drag, design and build prototypes and build their teamwork, critical thinking and creativity skills.

Schools then receive a follow on resource which includes real-life examples of some of the diverse careers in space, while the competition is judged.

Finally, regional winners are selected and invited to the Royal International Air Tattoo in July for a final Lego® robotics challenge.

The overall national winners will also receive two Lego® Spike Primes for their school worth £670
